Abstract

Although labyrinth seals with honeycomb facings are used in many applications in aero engines nearly no detailed information is available for the influence of honeycomb design parameters. Hence, the objective of the present study is to analyze the influence of honeycomb height and honeycomb diameter on the leakage loss and the heat transfer in labyrinth seals for a wide range of configurations and operating conditions.
To gain such a broad picture, a parametric study of different labyrinth seals, commonly used in turbo machines, was conducted varying seal clearance, step height, flow direction, honeycomb geometry and pressure ratio.
As expected, the analysis shows that honeycomb height and honeycomb diameter are of great importance for stator temperatures, but also affect leakage and rotor temperatures
