Primary atomization of prefilming airblast nozzles: Experimental studies using advanced image processing techniques

An experimental investigation is conducted exploring the coupling of the film flow and primary breakup pro-
cess in an industrial prefilming airblast nozzle at various operating conditions. High speed shadowgraphy
recordings are analyzed using advanced mathematical procedures, namely: proper orthogonal decomposi-
tion (POD) and dynamic mode decomposition (DMD). The results reveal the interaction of a precessing vortex
core (PVC) on the liquid film flow. The decoupling of the film flow and the breakup process observed in generic
atomizer designs is also observed and identified in these experiments. Additionally, using DMD the dynamics
of the complex film flow can be identified and can be expected to be accurately captured by a linear system
approach.
